Ultimately the movie is about the friendship of Devon and Gabby, and how this adventure changes their relationship and ultimately makes it stronger.
Making of 5 Leo Rise
Creating the fictitious boy band, 5 Leo Rise, was one of the most challenging yet fun aspects of making this movie. We wanted to create a modern boy band, where each member of the band had a distinct style and personality. Ritchie is the goth-like, mysterious lead singer, Mason is the dreamy 'makes the girls swoon' crooner, Scooter is the goofy preppy punk, K.K. is the bad boy former BMX rider and Nikolai is the former Russian pop star brought over to the US by the band's manager. It was essential that the band feel authentic because so much of the movie was resting on the audience's belief that this band was so important to Gabby and Devon.
In order to really make the band work we had to create their hit song. When the Click Five sent us "Kidnap My Heart" which they wrote specifically for the movie, we were so thrilled because the song had to be great in order for the movie to work. We had to believe that these girls loved this band, and they have created a song that is memorable and will have you humming throughout the movie. The band had to create two versions of the song "Kidnap My Heart". The first version is their album version with a poppy boy band vibe. As the band evolves in the movie they decide they want to play their own instruments and have a more rock sound. So they did a cover of their own song in with a pop rock vibe. What's so impressive is that the band did a cover of their own song and both versions are great.
The cast was so wonderful to work with. They were spontaneous, energetic and full of fantastic ideas. We had rehearsals so everybody could get comfortable in their characters. I wanted them to do as much improv work as they wanted, play around with their characters and see how they interacted. There are so many funny moments from the movie derived from those rehearsals. Rehearsals also helped the members of The Click Five get comfortable because none of them had ever acted before. And none of them are playing themselves, they are all playing characters and they did a fantastic job in the movie.
