A skull at the beach, a busted watch, and a green brassiere are just some of the many wild images that are featured in this animated short. Director Emily Hubley plays with musical tones and shifting symbolic images to create eight moments when things come together in mysterious cohesion. Embellishing on surrealist themes such as a picture puzzle, a one-word clue, and a new tone played on an embellished musical scale, Octave provides a distinct mental location for audience members to explore their unconscious.
Emily Hubley has been making short animated films for 25 years and lending her animation skills to films for over a decade. Her artwork and animation were seen in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Along with Jeremiah Dickey, Hubley created inserts for the documentaries Original Child Bomb, Blue Vinyl, and Bubble Boy. She is working on The Toe Tactic for Gigantic Pictures. In 2004, the Sundance Institute named Hubley an Annenberg Film Fellow.
