Fact: Denis Johnson is not the kind of writer to hit the pavement in order to plug his latest book, Tree of Smoke. Rather, Johnson is more likely to be holed up in Iraq working on a story as Smoke wins the National Book Award, forcing his wife to accept the prize for the 600-page Vietnam epic in his place. An accomplished journalist, novelist, and poet, Johnson is perhaps best known for the drug-hazed must-read classic Jesus' Son, a book that received multiple votes in the New York Times' "Best Fiction of the Past 25 Years" and was adapted into an independent film starring Billy Crudup. Queue up early for this event; Johnson rarely reads and it's going to be crowded.
