Comment on the Tribeca/ESPN Fans' Favorite Football Film
You made the call, and thanks to your votes, we have 16 contenders fighting to win Movie Mayhem 2008. The overwhelming favorites are Remember the Titans and Rudy, which outpaced all other candidates for the top two seeds. Can we expect to see these underdog stories face off in the finals? Or will this tournament’s own underdog upstarts, Wildcats and Necessary Roughness, tackle one of the favorites in the first round? Will the little giants in Little Giants prove bigger than their Friday Night Lights high school counterparts? Will James Caan have a winner with Brian’s Song or The Program? Will Tom Cruise's Jerry Maguire have us at hello, or will Keanu Reeves, Gene Hackman, and The Replacements prevail? We can’t answer these questions. Only your votes and comments will determine who continues on to round two and still has a chance to win the ultimate crown of Fans’ Favorite Football Flick.

Marshall University a "Winner"
by Anonymous April 11, 2008 10:16 PM
I was attending Marshall at the time of the crash and lived on the 6th floor of South Hall with the players. Winning this award would be a great tribute to a group of fine young men and local supporters. Go Herd Forever!

If you allow this ballot-box stuffing of We Are Marshall by the MU fans to continue, the Tribeca film fest will have lost all credibility.

I am so honored to see the comments left in regards to the movie We Are Marshall. As a student there, I have seen first hand the impact this movie has made on the community, and it has been nothing but positive. To all the families and friends of those who were lost and whose lives were touched in anyway, may God continue to bless you everyday. GO HERD!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymous April 13, 2008 10:34 AM
I am sorry but nobody is "ballot box" stuffing. Marshall fans are simply passionate about their community, school and team and are voting accordingly. If you find that frustrating them garner up some support just the same as we have.

I went to see this movie when it came out and have puchased the dvd and watched it at least 6 times. This movie captured everything that was going on at that time, and the producers got it right. Being 18 at the time and knowing one of the players that had graduated from my high school. This film captured every emotion a person could feel. Also, I noticed when I voted that We Are Marshall had a 91% rate to Rudy at 9%...hmmm, can you feel the THUNDER!

As a Marshall Alumni, I have to say that I am not surprised by the amazing support this movie is receiving. This community has always been connected on a deeper level because of this tragedy. Every member of this community remembers this tragedy every time we walk by that fountain. They are gone but they are definitely not forgotten and will remain in our hearts forever. GO HERD!!!
Ballot Box Stuffing
by Anonymous April 13, 2008 06:27 PM
This comment about ballot box stuffing could only come from a jealous WV Mountaineer fan. They can't stand that Marshall has been able to steal the spotlight for a moment. Anytime there is a classless comment made against The Herd, you can count on it being from an 'Eerdiot. It's a shame. GO HERD!!!

WE ARE MARSHALL!
by Anonymous April 14, 2008 05:23 AM
We are Marshall is the most heart warming film of all time. This movie reflects the courage, strength, and determination of a small town school. Marshall University has came along way since then and it is my belief that if the Football program would have ended, it would have stunted the growth and development of the school as well as that of the town. The triumphant return of The Thundering Herd is something we should all be proud of.

I am so proud that the true story of my alma mater could be told through such a great film. There are many people across the country who already knew about the tragedy that took place on November 14, 1970, but this film introduced the spirit of Marshall to many new people, and as is my hope, to many new fans. I was not born until years after the plane crash, but I stood by the memorial fountain with community members and other members of the student body on November 14 each year I attended Marshall. I stood with those who were still grieving the losses of the crash. I prayed for those I never knew, but those I could proudly call my fellow sons and daughters of Marshall. “Ballot stuffing” or not, those who love Marshall University remember these words from our Alma Mater by C.E. and James Haworth: “May the years be kind to Marshall; May she grow in fame; May her children fail her never True to her beacon flame May her spirit brave and strong Honor right and conquer wrong; This the burden of our song Ever her truth proclaim.”
We are.....Inspired!

Whenever you feel like giving up, watch WE ARE MARSHALL. Whenever you feel unmotivated watch WE ARE MARSHALL. This movie portrayed the Players, the Team, the community all very well. MC.G did what he said he was going to do by never "glorifiying us". He was going to let the film do the talking and thats what he did. He made a ACCURATE portrayal of the entire situtation. I salute him. The actors were amazing and FOX stole the show. I saw the premier in huntington at the keith albee and there wasnt a dry eye in the building. Possibly the saddest thing i've ever witnessed. To see family members of the players and coaches and residents cry uncontrollably was something a 26 year old will never forget. So whether its a movie were voting on or supporting THE HERD on the field, its a LOVE for THAT TEAM that keeps me in Huntington. I'm a Marshall fan for life, and probably after life as well. Go Herd and I see hands down this being the number one movie. If not i still view it as it is #1 Go HERD!!!!

Lest I, too, be accused of ballot box stuffing, I was NOT a student at MU when this occurred and am, in fact, a WVU graduate (later going to Marshall for a graduate degree). However, I was a newspaper reporter in Huntington during the rebuilding year (having gotten out of the Navy shortly after the plane crashed). It is one of the most inspiring sports movies I've ever seen because it is about a community...not just a team. As an aside, why wasn't one of the other all-time great football movies, North Dallas Forty, even on the list???

We are so proud of the Marshall movie and how well it protrayed the events. I love Rudy but have to say that the We Are Marshall movie is about an entire community and its healing while Rudy is the perserverence of one person. In my opinion that makes the Marshall movie more deserving!

A story that needed to be told! Regardless of the pain that many in the MU family suffered, it is still an inspirational story. The Red Dawson story line alone is worthy of a separate movie.

I as many writer's have written,The Hurt and pain that the State of WV went through was un spaekable.I recall the day the News broke the story Just like the Killing of President Kennedy. I will never forget the Place and time.I was a Marshall Student and I saw 1st hand how it effected the University and the Love and Respect that those Players gave to the Game. The Movie gave the Nation an idea of dedication and ability to start over and how sports can bring together a State and city and Families back together it was not all about the Game . But the Game is about how you build love and respect. Least we never forget.

There were many great football movies through the years. We are Marshall was definitely my favorite - so beatifully written. Don't trash it's class with imature ignorant comments. Rudy was also a fantastic movie. I believe this is a vote for favorite football movie, not a personal attack on other schools. Right?

Most of the movies in competition are very good - but it's hard to argue with "We Are Marshall". There has never been a team that faced greater odds against them and never a story that showed greater perseverence! I was there - and if a movie can capture what happened - this one did!

It is wonderful that after so many years, this movie was made showing what Huntington and the Marshall community experienced when they were faced with a tragedy of this magnitude. I was a Freshman at Marshall along with many of the "Young Thundering Herd" and will never forget that first win. THEY said it couldn't be done--well, We Are..... Marshall!!!!! and I am a proud to be a Marshall graduate.

I began my life at Marshall the year after the crash and lived on the 5th floor of South Hall with many of the remaining football players. My first college game was the one against Xavier. We also beat Bowling Green for the homecoming game. Two of the greatest upsets in college football history!! The movie touched me deeply.

by Anonymous April 14, 2008 04:33 PM
I was a freshman at Marshall in November 1970. One of those players that died was in my history class. I remember sitting at home on that rainy Saturday evening watching TV and hearing that a plane had gone down at the airport. That was one of the saddest days of my life, next to losing my own dear family members years later. The student body president was my future brother in law and I remember watching him on TV when they had the memorial service at The Memorial Field House. They played the hymn O God Our Help in Ages Past. I will always remember Marshall University when I hear and sing that Hymn. I was there during those next few years and the stadium was always packed at home games even though the Young Herd lost more than one. This definitely is MY favorite football movie because it is about MY TEAM!!!

I never understood what was ever inspirational or commendable about someone who is .5% talent and 99.5% arrogance who didn't care about anything but himself, but never the less reached his dream to play a couple of downs for a losing football team. What happened to NORTH DALLAS 40? I agree with a previous logger. Even HOOSIERS a movie about basketball was a better football movie.

I even went on-line and looked up the actual "We Are Marshall" team. It is very interesting. I am so glad they made a movie of that school/town. I feel honored to be one of the people to vote for this film. GO HERD'S. "WE ARE .......MARSHALL"!!!!! May God bless those people of that home town. Bobbie is very proud of that team!

I remember the night of the tradgedy very well and am linked to the crash by the planes tail section striking the tops of the trees on my Uncles land across the road from the crash site. I was in attendance at the Xavier game and sat on the 40 yard line and watched Terry Gardner make the game winning catch. I hope that We Are Marshall wins as this would be a great tribute to the players, coaches and fans that parrished that cold rainy November night. Marshall has truely risen from the Ashes and the players have finally been honored.

I don't remember the night, but I do recall the days after the crash. I was only 5 years old - everyone I knew was talking about the tragic event. Many promising individuals were suddenly lost and yet somehow a small community found the strength to continue. The struggle of the "Young Herd" is so parallel to the struggle of the entire community. God Bless

I loved Rudy, the movie. However, the story of one person's triumph doesn't come close to losing the lives of 75 people, and destroying a whole team. I am from Huntington, and was a freshman when this happened. Lots of my friends lost parents and brothers in this crash. While Rudy was admirable, there's no comparison what an entire university, football team and community had to overcome to "rise from the ashes." WE ARE ... MARSHALL!

by Anonymous April 15, 2008 01:21 PM
As I Marshall Alum I was BRAINWASHED to think there was a real story here but after seeing the movie I realized that even all the Hollywood glitz, glamour, special effects and so called "Star Power" couldn't make a decent story out of this disaster. All it did was give the University and fools like Sonny Randall an excuse for spending money, forcing students to pay ungodly activity fees and taking 20 years to build a decent football team!
Re. the "HELL" poster

Wow. I mean, just, wow. One more word: counseling.
Re:WOW!
by Anonymous April 15, 2008 04:22 PM
Actually, from a professional therapist point of view it is the community who has chosen the pathological grieving path that is in need of counseling. Like much of WV, the area has chosen to accept the role of victim and the movie proves that it continues to look for validation from others.

Response to WOW
by Anonymous April 15, 2008 07:23 PM
As we go thru life, some of us are faced with real tragedies and genuinely hurt, others like WOW above go thru life pretending to know how the rest of us feel, having no clue, because nothing in life matters to them. So they never know pain, hurt, sorrow, jubilation, hope, passion or love. Their only feeling is condemnation for their fellow man that do have feelings. I guarantee you, there is a whole lot more of us than there are of you… Dennis

I was a freshman at MU when the tragic plane crash occurred. My husband and I, along with another couple, heard the crash from our home. We went outside and saw the red sky then hopped in the car and drove to the crash site. It was pouring rain and we had the radio on listening to the news reports. It took us about fifteen minutes to get to the crash site and what we saw when we topped the hill was horrible. We got out of the car and asked a fireman if there was anything we could do. His exact words were, "It's over! There is nothing anyone can do." We smelled burning flesh and the wreckage was all over the hillside. Some large pieces of the plane and others smaller. Debris was strewn over the entire side of the hill. I'll never forget that evening. We left and it was on the way back home we heard that the entire MU football team and some Huntington citizens were on the plane that crashed. To those of you making all he negative remarks about the movie all I can say is you have no heart. I understand your opinion of not likeing the WAM movie as well as another but where do you come off as making such remarks? I'm a Floridian now but have and always will miss Huntington, WV and the comradery of the people living there. Marshall University is love!!

By the way if you really are a therapist you may want to change careers. Find a job where empathy is not invovled. The people who lived through this event deserve our compassion and our honor. I salute you, Huntingto, WV. You are a very classy town.

I compliment the actors, writers and historians behind the movie. My emotions and tears were right there in this gripping movie of reality and the people of Huntington, WV (Herd Country). The film truly depicts the fine people of West Virginia and what good can come from a decent hard working community. Thanks to all who made such a great movie possible and those who have watched the movie (some 7 times.) A true honor for those loved ones lost on the plane that night. God Bless the families and may we never forget!!!!

That was the most moving movie I have ever watched. Being a Canadian, I will never feel the hurt as they do, but did feel the hurt they felt. Hurray excellent movie

Marshall grad 1964- JAMES W. BAKER, MD LEXINGTON, KY-SAE Love the movie. Have seen it several times. It is by far the best sports movie of all time because of its human interest and screenplay. It should never be forgotten. GO HERD!

A fitting tribute to a tragic accident. The people, students, athletes and all who were a part of the Young Herd deserve to take their place in movie history. GO HERD!!!!!

If We are Marshall does not win, there is no justice. As a person who grew up in the Ohio Valley and remembers the pain and hurt so many of us felt when this tragedy occured, it would be a slap in the face to all who fought their way through this horrible ordeal. Remember WE ARE MARSHALL and nobody should forget that.
