The 2008 TFF Awards Artists Program Will Feature Donated Work from 13 Major Artists

The Tribeca Film Festival announced today that 13 major contemporary artists will contribute pieces to the Festival's 2008 Artists Awards Program, sponsored by Chanel. Participating artists are some of the industry's most dynamic and recognizable names, including Francesco Clemente, Ross Bleckner, Don Gummer, Timothy White, John Alexander, Stephen Hannock, Renee Cox, Brandon d'Leo, Donna Ferrato, Ralph Gibson, Ryan McGinness, and O Zhang. Clifford Ross will participate for a second year, and Steven Hannock will continue his participation for the seventh consecutive year.

TFF '08 Film Quiet Chaos Scores 18 Nominations for Italy's David di Donatello Awards

Antonello Grimaldi's searching drama about grief and spiritual rebirth, which will screen as part of the World Narrative Competition at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, scooped up a remarkable 18 nominations for the David di Donatello prizes, Italy's equivalent of the Oscars, earning a nod in every category for which it qualified. The film, which stars renowned Italian auteur Nanni Moretti (and features a cameo by Roman Polanski), is a portrait of a Roman television executive seeking to cope with his wife's sudden death.


Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival Alum The First Saturday in May Will Be Released in April

Mark Cuban's Truly Indie distribution program has announced that it will roll out the TFF '07 Kentucky Derby-themed sports doc, The First Saturday in May, which was part of last year's Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival. Churchill Downs, site of the Derby, will also sponsor the April release.

Taxi to the Dark Side wins Best Documentary Feature Oscar

Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony, director Alex Gibney and producer Eva Orner took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for their controversial Taxi to the Dark Side. The film, which had its World Premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, examines the case of an Afghan taxi driver who was beaten to death while in U.S. military custody in 2002, bringing to light American military abuses of political prisoners


Oscar for Best Song goes to Tribeca/ASCAP alums Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

The Academy Award for best Original Song went to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for "Falling Slowly," from their film Once, about an Irish singer-songwriter and young Czech immigrant who begin a musical collaboration in the hope of landing a recording contract. The two performed at the Tribeca/ASCAP Music Lounge in April of 2007, just weeks before the US release of the film.


Best Documentary Short Oscar awarded to Cynthia Wade and TFF alum Vanessa Rot

TFF alum Vanessa Roth (The Third Monday in October, 2007) and her co-director Cythia Wade won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short for their film Freeheld at Sunday's ceremony. In just 38 minutes, Freeheld chronicles the story of New Jersey Detective Lieutenant Laurel Hester, who is dying of cancer and barred from transferring her pension to her domestic partner Stacie.


HBO pickes up cable premiere of Taxi to the Dark Side

HBO has acquired Alex Gibney's Taxi to the Dark Side (TFF '07) in the wake of the Discovery Channel dropping its plans to air the "too controversial" film. Discovery will retain basic-cable rights to the film, and has now stated that it will, in fact, screen Taxi in 2009, but for now the film will see its cable debut in uncut form on HBO in September.


Benten Films acquires The Free Will (TFF '07)

Independent DVD distributor Benten films has acquired the North American rights to The Free Will (TFF 2006). Matthias Glasner's bold drama about a convicted rapist's reintegration into society after six years in jail earned lead Jurgen Vogel a Best Actor award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. The Free Will will be released on DVD on June 24, 2008.


TFI launches second annual Tribeca Teaches:Films in Motion program

The Tribeca Film Institute has just launched the second annual Tribeca Teaches: Films In Motion program with the Bronx Preparatory Charter School. The program challenges students to think critically about film through a TFI-created school curriculum, and will run from February 11 through April 18 this year.


Discovery Channels abandons Gibney's "controversial" Taxi

The Discovery Channel is under fire for abandoning its plans to air Alex Gibney's acclaimed Oscar-nominated documentary Taxi to the Dark Side, which won Best Documentary at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, after determining that the film is "too controversial."

Submissions open for the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund

January 30, 2008
The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund, which offers finishing funds to feature-length documentaries that explore issues of social justice, will begin accepting submissions on February 5. Films must be in production or post-production, with an intended premiere date in 2009. Grants will range from $5,000 to $30,000, and fund recipients will be announced by August 1.

TFF '07 Films nominated for Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its list of nominations for the 2008 Academy Awards. Alex Gibney's Taxi to the Dark Side (TFF '07) is up for Best Documentary Feature, and Tim Sternberg's short film Salim Baba (also TFF '07) has been nominated for Best Documentary Short. Until further notice, the ceremony is still planned for February 24.


An Evening with Pascale Ferran at MoMA

On January 28, Modern Mondays at MoMA presents An Evening with Pascale Ferran, director of award-winning TFF'07 film Lady Chatterley. The film's screening is preceded by an introduction with Ferran at 7 p.m.; Lady Chatterley will also screen on February 7, with no filmmaker introduction.


AJ Schnack teams with IndiePix for alternative documentary awards ceremony

Filmmaker AJ Schnack has teamed with online distributor IndiePix to launch an alternative documentary awards ceremony to take place March 18 at New York's IFC Center. A group of festival programmers, including Tribeca's David Kwok, has selected its own shortlist, which features TFF films The Devil Came on Horseback and Taxi to the Dark Side.


TFF '07 Film advances in voting for 2007 Oscar Nomination

Nine foreign-language films have advanced in voting to qualify for a 2007 Oscar nomination, including 2007 TFF selection The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, this year's candidate from Brazil. Nominations will be announced next Tuesday, and until further notice, the ceremony is still planned for February 24.


Channel 13 has introduces Reel 13 Shorts

Channel 13 has introduced Reel 13 Shorts, an interactive online film competition celebrating the best in independent short films. After viewers vote on short films each week, the winner receives a cash prize and is broadcast as part of REEL 13, the channel's new Saturday night film showcase. Professional and aspiring filmmakers are encouraged to submit their work.

Eight-City Event, Pangea Day, set for May 10

January 2, 2008 When she won the prestigious TED Prize in 2006, Jehane Noujaim, director of the acclaimed 2004 documentary Control Room (and a TFF '07 juror), said she wished to unite the world through film. Now, with support from Nokia, she's organized Pangea Day, an eight-city event this May 10 which seeks to use film to promote global compassion and tolerance. A Son's Sacrifice to premiere on PBS's Independent Lens

December 19, 2007 Tribeca/ASCAP Music Lounge alum Mike Viola is releasing his new record Lurch in early 2008, and preorders are available on his website. He's also set up a five-day residency playing at Joe's Pub in NYC every Friday in February.


Hard as Nails (TFF '07) airs 12/17 on HBO

December 17, 2007 This fascinating documentary follows unordained evangelical minister Justin Fatica on his quest to save America's soul. Fatica uses his Hard As Nails Ministry to promote the gospel to all Christian faiths and reach out to the MTV generation.


TAA '04 alum Chris Chan Lee's Undoing will premiere this week at the Pioneer Theater in New York.

December 5, 2007 The film follows ex-gangster Sam, who returns to LA after a year-long absence determined to find redemption from the past. Undoing is Chan Lee's first film since his fast-paced Yellow in 1998. Actor Sung Kang and producers Karin Chein and Phil Lam will be on hand for Q&As after the Dec 5 and Dec 8 screenings.



TFF '07 Films nominated for Indie Spirit Awards

Nominees for the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards include three TFF '07 titles: 2 Days in Paris for Best First Feature, Shotgun Stories for the John Cassavetes Award (given to the best feature made for under $500,000), and Lady Chatterley for Best Foreign Film.

Peter Scarlet to Host "Cinemondo"

Breathe trailer finally hits the web

November 14, 2007 The trailer for TFF '07 film The Air I Breathe has finally made its way online. Due for a limited release in late January, director Jieho Lee's film starring Forest Whitaker, Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Kevin Bacon dramatizes an ancient Chinese proverb which describes life's four emotional cornerstones: happiness, pleasure, sorrow, and love.


Warner Bros. Records releases Live Earth short films

November 14, 2007 On July 7, 2007, 150 musical acts performed at a series of worldwide concerts called Live Earth to raise awareness for the climate crisis and deliver a solutions-based message to a global audience. On November 20th, Warner Bros. Records will release a CD and 2-DVD package featuring performances from the Live Earth concerts, along with a documentary on the making of Live Earth and the six short films from the Live Earth Film Series which screened at the Opening Night Gala of the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.


Elephant Eye spots Benson's B-Boy

November 2, 2007 IndieWIRE reports that fledgling distribution company Elephant Eye has picked up U.S. rights to Benson Lee's Planet B-Boy (TFF '07), which had its World Premiere at TFF '07 and screened at the Tribeca 798 Film Festival Beijing this July.

IFC steals Holdridge's 'Kiss'
